Sharpton: Griffin Dropped for Dropping N-Bomb

Eddie Griffin thought he'd shock the swells at a big Black Enterprise event over the weekend by littering his act with N-words, but the comic was the one who got the real jolt when the mag's owner gonged his routine, and tossed him off the stage!
Al Sharpton, Eddie Griffin
Rev. Al Sharpton tells TMZ that Griffin took the stage as the headliner and did his best Michael Richards impression, blistering the mostly African-American crowd with a barrage of N-bombs, and wailing, "Why are some black leaders telling us to stop using the N word?"

Griffin's mike was promptly cut, and Black Enterprise owner/publisher Earl Graves stomped on stage and proclaimed, "We ... will not allow our culture to go backwards ... We will pay Mr. Griffin all that we owe him but we will not allow him to finish the show if that's the way he's going to talk." Oh, snap!

The crowd gave Graves a standing ovation -- and Rev. Al, speaking the next day at the event, gave Graves props for his axing of Griffin. A rep for Griffin had no comment.

62. Yes! Yea for Graves! I can't wait to print this and bring it in for my ASIAN students to read. The "n-word" situation has gotten to be so ridiculous in its perversion as some kind of word of retarded hipness that *many* of my Asian (Paki, Palestinian, Chinese, Vietnamese) students use it with each other. It drives me crazy. One kid shared his memoir today in class about how he used to be in a gang in middle school (I teach in a bizarre community in Houston that is rep'd by 47 different countries but is permeated by thug-gangsta mentality. Anyway, he used the "n-word" in the middle of his essay in front of the whole class. I about died. I HATE that word! When I explained why and to what degree I hated that word, he said...and I quote: "But, Miss--if I cut that out, my whole, like, culture would be screwed." I said: "What? What culture? What culture can you possibly come from as an Asian boy with absolutely no right to any kind of ownership over the most heinous word in the English language that it would fall apart with out use of said heinous n-word?!?" It turned into this whole discussion--this whole "thing" at which point I had to point out that just recently in the news I'd read about the "funeral for the n-word" by the NAACP, the editors of Ebony and Jet (I think) banning their journalists from using the n-word, the fines *students* are imposing on each other in dorms at some of the most prestigious black colleges, the pressure black leaders are putting on the recording industry, yadda, yadda. The whole class probably thought I was nutty--on another rant, and a weird one for a frumpy, white-girl English teacher, but I do believe I made my point loud and clear. I hate that freakin' word and all that it stands for and I hate the way it has been perverted into something acceptable. I don't know any *educated* person, black, white, whatever, who uses the n-word. It's a thug mentality word and it's just go to go. Especially from, and I say this with love, my little nerdy Asian boys who in an effort to fight their nerdiness think "acting street" (and I mean "acting" b/c it is clearly an act) is a good option. It just doesn't work and it offends so many people and it's just ignorant.

63. Now, Griffin is funny some regard but, "Black Enterprise" is a very prominent and well org., why did he think that he could get away w/ that at event? That wasn't an HBO special of his. He's an idiot.

64. Humans can be so superficial. Each in our own time we'll all be dead and then what will race matter..?

65. And to poster #65... good grief--"Why is it white people act like their superior"--since when is it all white people? Besides the n-word, I hate superlatives. I can't stand it when people sum up whole lots of other people not with "most," "many," "sometimes," "frequently" but with "all," "always," "never," etc. Yep, there are some, maybe even a lot of, white people who think they're superior to black people, but they probably think they're superior to everybody else too. But not all white people think this way. Some white people are superior to black people. Some black people are superior to white people. Some people *are* superior--they have a better education, more common sense, better character, better financial savvy, more taste, a grander sense of adventure, friendlier friends, more patriotism--the whole nine yards. Nothing wrong with the idea that some people are more superior. But it's a fallacy to say or imply, because you left out an important qualifier, such as most or many or of those white people I've met, etc., that all white people think a certain way. We don't.

66. The only time you ever see the so called "Black Leaders" is when it suits them and can get the some type of publicity. Tell me one thing that the Rev's Jesse & Al have done for the community that didn't require a press conference and a camera crew. You only see Rev. Al on tv when he thinks he can speak for the entire black community. That's all I have to say about that.

67. Wow TMZ, Facts are NOT quite the way I saw it. I WAS THERE!!! Yes Eddie griffin show was stopped and yes he was offense to the audience, but he really didnt use the N word as described ( I count one reference where he said, "I'm not suppose to use the N-word so I'll say M.F. instead. Can yall handle that?). His show was stopped when he began discussing OJ, Kobe and white women in comparison to Michael Vick and the dog incident; whereby, OJ ( allegedly killed a white woman and Kobe allegedly raped a white woman and did not go to jail, yet Michael Vick admittedly killed dogs and will be going to jail.) Irrespective of the facts being accurate, the show still was appropriately stopped because folks were offended by his brand of comedy. It was truly the wrong venue for Eddie Griffin and whoever hired him could not have put much thought into the audience that is traditionally at the event (this being my 7th year in attendance).

68. I would like to commend Mr. Graves for stopping Mr. Griffin. As a retired Chicago Public School Principal, it is very difficult getting our boys and girls to see the wrong in calling each other names when movie stars and so called role models use the derrogatory statements in public. Please, for the sake of elementary school children everywhere, let's focus on learning more descriptive vocabulary words than the "N" word!

69. My friend Ramone sent me a link to Rev Al's Racist remarks, where he describes Afro Americans in the same text as.

70. I was there back stage when all this took place and here is what really happened. First of all they told Eddie before we went to the venue that he could not say this and that, he said ok i'll just get up there and thank a few peolpe and walk. I forget the gentlemans name but he went and told Mr. Grayes son that is running the magazine Black Enterprise. He[Eddie] told them repeatedly that they knew who he was and what they were getting when they hired him, and if they wanted a Bill Cosby type then they should have hired Bill Cosby[no offense to DR. Cosby]. Then Mr. Grayes son came back stage and said " you can do your show don't worry about anything say what you want don't worry about a thing". this was after he found out that most of the people were there to see Eddie. He didn't want to do the show in the first place because he is an artist, and you can't sensor his art form. After being assured by Mr. Grayes son he did it. I personally think it was a punk move on Black Enterprise behalf to let him get up there then cut his mike off. When it was over The elder Mr. Grayes tried to have us thrown off the resort for doing a show that his son approved. Then we found out he wanted Eddie to come to his room and apologize for doing what he was hired to do, so Eddie being the man that he is said "he should come down and apologize to me I didn't do anything wrong". That never happened so both of Mr. Grayes sons came down and apologized for their father. Al SHarpton is a hippocrit he and Eddie talk all the time and for him of all people to come out and say this is wrong. Where was the "good Reverend" when the segregation law was overturned it is now legal to have seperate water fountains and bathrooms again thus the Gena 6. Wake up my people they have "Weapons of Mass Distractions" smoke and mirrors. Freedom of speech is next. prtect the firs amendment. Wilbert is my name my email address is babydoz25@yahoo.com I will always defend my brother "we all we got".
